How to Prepare for a Winter Storm

The forecast calls for snow this weekend in the Triangle and while some residents are excited, it is important to take proper precautions as well. The most important thing to do is to prepare yourself and your home ahead of time and make a plan to be off the roads. From stocking up on supplies to having a plan in place for emergency situations, here are some of the best tips for preparing for a winter storm:

  • Make sure you have enough water and non-perishable goods. Don't forget to gather blankets, candles, flashlights, and batteries in the event that power is lost. Keep a first aid kit or essential medical supplies on hand.

  • Don't forget sanitation and personal hygiene items!

  • Charge your electronics and keep portable chargers nearby if you have them. We like to keep our electronics plugged in throughout the storm in the event that power is lost.

  • Take out some extra cash.

  • Fuel your vehicle and winterize it as necessary.

  • Make sure medications are full.

  • Don't forget your pets! Make sure you have food and water for your furry friends and know where their leash and/or carrier is in your home.
  • If you will not be home, make sure that your heat is on and set to a minimum of 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Prevent frozen pipes! Keep your home as warm as you can, keep garage doors closed, run a trickle of water and open cabinet drawers to help improve air circulation.

  • Avoid slips and falls by making sure you have items for shoveling and salting any walkways or driveways at your home.

  • Know your evacuation route and nearest emergency shelters. Make sure that your family knows what to do should an emergency arise and have emergency contact numbers and addresses written down.

For even more storm preparation tips, check out the Winter Storm Preparedness Guide from The Red Cross. They also have a great printable checklist.

Stay safe and have a great snowy weekend!
